RetailNext was founded in 2007 with a clear vision: bring e-commerce-style analytics to physical retail stores. While online retailers enjoyed detailed insights into every customer interaction, brick-and-mortar retailers were making their most consequential decisions — staffing, layout, marketing, loss prevention — based on guesswork. We set out to change that, and we've spent 18 years doing exactly that.
Our Story
The Beginning — 2007
RetailNext was co-founded by Alexei Agratchev and Marlie Liu with a single mission: give physical retailers the same analytical power that e-commerce had always enjoyed. The company pioneered in-store analytics as a dedicated category — the first technology company built exclusively for brick-and-mortar retail. From day one, the focus was singular: accurate, actionable data for the physical store.
Building the Category — 2007-2015
RetailNext grew from a startup into the defining platform for retail analytics, establishing the standard for people counting accuracy, shopper journey analysis, and traffic-based decision-making across enterprise retail networks globally. As the category grew, RetailNext remained its most trusted name — winning the loyalty of leading retail brands who recognized the difference between purpose-built analytics and repurposed technology.
Platform Evolution — 2016-2021
The introduction of the Aurora® sensor marked a step-change in accuracy and capability. RetailNext expanded from traffic counting into a comprehensive intelligence platform — adding behavioral analytics, asset protection, and occupancy management. What began as a single-product company became a full-suite retail intelligence solution, still built exclusively for the complexity of physical retail.
Strengthening the Platform — 2022-2024
RetailNext acquired the Retail Performance division of Ipsos, strengthening its benchmarking capabilities and expanding its data network — giving customers unparalleled context to compare their performance against industry peers. A majority growth investment from Battery Ventures in 2025 then equipped RetailNext to accelerate product innovation, expand its global team, and further develop AI-powered capabilities at the core of the platform's next phase.

Alexei Agratchev
CEO & Co-Founder
Alexei co-founded RetailNext in 2007, pioneering the world's first technology company dedicated exclusively to advanced in-store analytics for brick-and-mortar retail. Before RetailNext, he spent eight years at Cisco Systems in a number of leadership roles, including as Founder and General Manager of an internal startup within the Cisco Emerging Technologies Group focused on video applications for retail markets. Prior to Cisco, Alexei was a consultant at Accenture's Electronics and High Tech Operating Unit. He holds a Bachelor's degree in International Relations from Claremont McKenna College (Magna Cum Laude) and has completed the Stanford Graduate School of Business Executive Program. Named to Silicon Valley Business Journal's 40 Under 40.
Marlie Liu
COO & Co-Founder
Marlie co-founded RetailNext alongside Alexei in 2007 and has led operations for nearly two decades, overseeing the deployment of over 100,000 proprietary AI sensor installations worldwide. She leads a team of over 100 employees across operations, growing RetailNext's customer base by 13% and workforce by 8% in recent years. Recognized on Inc. Magazine's Female Founders 250 list.
Jason Luther
CTO
Jason leads RetailNext's technology organization, overseeing platform architecture, product engineering, and the continued development of the RetailNext Intelligence Platform. He is the executive sponsor of RetailNext's HubSpot CMS migration and internal technology infrastructure initiatives.
Sergio Gutierrez
CRO
Sergio leads RetailNext's global revenue organization, overseeing sales, partnerships, and go-to-market strategy. He has been with RetailNext since 2017, building the commercial team that serves 560+ retail customers across 100+ countries.
Andrew Golden
Chief People Officer
Andrew leads RetailNext's People function, overseeing the full employee lifecycle across RetailNext's global workforce. He is responsible for talent acquisition, culture, and organizational development as RetailNext continues to scale.
